Global
- by everyone, for everyone, from everywhere.
Development
- how to progress, dealing with global issues, improving our practices.
Village
- a friendly area, full of life, on a human scale.
The Global development village is all this and more. It is a central part of the World Scout Jamboree where the participants, IST’s, visitors and others will meet with Non-Governmental Organizations, International Governmental Organizations, Companies and UN agencies in a bilaterally fruitful partnership aiming to create a better world. The GDV will introduce different interactive activities, designed to help scouts from all over the world learn about global issues, give them tools to use, and a dedication to act against the injustices they meet in their everyday life. It is a unique event that will help shape the values and visions of the leaders of tomorrow.
Is this something new?
No, the GDV has been part of every World Scout Jamboree Since 1991 and has played a fundamental role in teaching Scouts about the latest advancements and initiatives on social development, peace and the environment. Scouts from all over the world have started high-impact projects in their local communities after learning in the Jamboree’s Global Development Village how to make a difference and cooperate with other organizations. The GDV is an empowering opportunity to help Scouts realize they are a social force, a culture of peace, and a constructive contribution. The awareness raised among participants replicates to our more than 28 million members in 160 countries as they go back to tell their stories and begin projects and partnerships with their local scout groups and other organizations.
What will the Global Development Village be like?
The Global Development Village is a real village. It will be multimedia exhibitions, a village square, and countless interactive workshops. International Organizations, National Scout Organizations and participants will be able to showcase short-films about global issues, engage in passionate discussions about changing the world, experience thought-provoking exhibitions, and generate a constructive dialogue across generations. In general, the GDV will be a place full of life and hope.
How is this organized?
The activities are organized into six different themes that concern the great challenges facing the world today. These themes are:
- Peace
- Health
- Human Rights
- Environment and Sustainability
- Entrepreneurship
- Information & Communication Technologies
There will also be a seventh theme called Special Events, creating lots of fun activities during afternoon and evenings, located on the GDV or outside the GDV.
What types of activities will there be?
The activities at the GDV will be developed and held by experts working with development issues, from all over the world. From people working with alcohol problems among youth in Sweden to people working with flooding in Pakistan, all experts in their area. The activities will give knowledge, tools and commitment, in order to Create a Better World.
The participants have the opportunity to take part in the Workshops, which is the GDV contribution to the Module Activity. During this time the GDV will be full of meetings, trying to spread solidarity between scouts.
Visitors, IST’s etc, who are not participants, can get a feeling of the GDV, with solidarity spreading in the air, by visiting the Interactive Stands. This is a time where you have the ability to get closer to certain organizations, discussing issues more deeply and take part in shorter activities. At the Interactive Stands you as leaders can get high quality and fun activities to bring home to your local scout troop, and share your activities and experiences with organization.
During afternoons and evenings, the GDV will be full of activities made by the Special Events, which is opened for everyone just to drop by. So take the chance to visit the GDV one afternoon, in order to learn something about injustices in the world, learn some tools to change them and get a commitment and engagement that will give you the strength to act.
