Every four years, tens of thousands of Scouts from every corner of the world gather for two weeks in a tented city for the adventure of a lifetime. First organized in 1920 by Baden-Powell to foster worldwide brotherhood in the same way as the Olympic Games, the World Scout Jamboree has grown into a unique international peace camp for 30,000 boys and girls aged 14-17 from 150 countries to meet across geographical, religious, and cultural borders. Jamboree participants take part in a multitude of activities and adventures and receive extensive leadership training and tools for contributing to a better society in their home communities.
In the summer of 2011, The Swedish Guide and Scout Council is honoured to host the 22nd World Scout Jamboree near the town of Kristianstad in Sweden. In order to achieve an event that is truly diverse and inclusive, we have set up the Operation One World fund to provide scholarships for Scouts who would otherwise not be able to participate due to a lack of financial resources. Many of these youth have never travelled outside of their home cities or villages before, yet show tremendous potential to frame and shape our global and collective futures if only afforded the opportunity to do so. A secondary benefit of their participation is that it enhances the overall experience for other Scouts as well, enriching their understanding of our diverse world. Our fundraising goal for Operation One World is equivalent to 3.3% of the total amount of Jamboree fees or approximately 900,000 USD.
Operation One World assists Scouts with all Jamboree-related expenses including costs for suitable camp clothing, a warm sleeping bag and tent, transportation, entry visas, as well costs for the stay in Sweden before and after the Jamboree. We will work together with the six regional offices of the World Organization of the Scout Movement to select a minimum of 370 young people who would not be able to participate without the help of the scholarship and whose participation will have a deep impact on them and their surrounding environment. We need to raise approximately 1,500-2,500 USD (depending on country of origin) for each Scout to be able to participate in the World Scout Jamboree 2011.
